It seems that Kurt Vonnegut was right when he wrote Harrison Bergeron. Society cannot abide intellect and originality popping up where it is not expected. As I write this, creative teachers, all over the world, are being placed on notice that they are to get back in their box.
Already this week, there have been several reports of incidents where teachers have been instructed NOT to teach in a particular way, not because the activity was immoral or incorrect. NO, even though their students were learning and enjoying their classes, these teachers were told to conform. These teachers were censored for no reason except that their students were learning and ENJOYING the learning.
With that I leave you with a short quote from Kurt Vonnegut, Jr's short story, Harrison Bergeron, a short story included in the anthology Welcome to the Monkey House:
"Harrison Bergeron, age fourteen,...has just escaped from jail,
where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the
government. He is a genius and an athlete, is under handicapped,
and should be regarded as extremely dangerous."
excerpted from the short story, Harrison Bergeron, written by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr, 1961.
